What is birth photography?

Birth story photography memorializes the miracle of birth in once-in-a-lifetime images.

One of the most memorable days of your life is the birth of your child. I’ll document the story of your child’s birth as it unfolds. I’ll document the labor, the delivery, the first looks, the kisses, and snuggles. Every birth story is different but every single one is a testament to the strength of the mother and her love.

Why Birth Story Photography?

Birth is a transformative, intense and all-consuming experience for everyone involved. It’s powerful and chaotic and beautiful, and when it’s over the memories of what just happened can get muddled and confused and lost in the wave of exuberance and relief that comes with holding a new life in your arms.

I know from personal experience that birth is a blur. So I look at the pictures to remind me what happened. I look forward to the day that my kiddo is old enough for me to tell him about the day he was born – and show him pictures.

I’ll capture your loved ones supporting you and encouraging you. I’ll capture the hard work you did and way you concentrated on your breathing to get through the next wave of contractions, and the moment you drew the strength from inside of you to do that last push to bring your child into the world. I’ll capture the moment you and your partner laid eyes on your baby for the first time. I’ll capture the newborn snuggles and all the tiny features of your baby that you tried to imagine for months – their hands, feet, hair (or no hair!), face and so on.

How Does It Work?

I will meet you and (if applicable) your significant other to get to know you and you get to know me. Being invited to your birthing space is an honor and I take that honor seriously. We’ll talk about the value of birth photography, answer your questions, go over your comfort level of what you want to be captured, how and when you know to give me “the call.” We’ll talk about what happens after birth and how you’re getting your photos and products.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “On-call” mean?

When your birth is on my calendar, I will be available at a moment’s notice at any hour of the day and night between the beginning of your 38th week until your baby gets born. Because I wouldn’t miss your baby’s birth for the world, I will only accept up to three births a month, and I won’t leave the area.

What areas do you serve?

I serve Southwest Michigan only – Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and their nearby surrounding areas.

Wouldn’t it be just as good to have my partner, parent, friend, or doctor/nurse/midwife take pictures for me?

You could do that, if they are willing and remember, but in the moment, do you want your partner or friend worrying about taking pictures, or do you want them to be with you?
Also, birthing rooms often have low-lighting situations that smartphones or even consumer-level cameras just can’t handle as well as a professional photographer with professional equipment.
Doctors, midwives, and nurses are really good at ushering babies into the world, but photography? Less so. Let them do what they do well, and let me do what I do well.

I’m having a c-section. I shouldn’t have the birth documented, right?

I’m a strong believer that all birth is birth. Regardless if they come out vaginal, c-section or teleportation. (Teleportation sounds nice.) Every birth story is valuable. Keep in mind that some hospitals have restrictions on who can come in the operating room. So if you get permission for me to be in the room, I’ll capture when they lift the baby up and you meet your baby face-to-face. Super precious. If I do not have permission, I will still capture the laboring process, when you return from the c-section and do a Fresh 48 session.

Why is birth photography such a big investment?

Birth is a once-in-a-lifetime event that will never happen again for this tiny human. It’s not unlike a wedding, except they won’t remember it.

A big difference between birth photography and wedding photography is that you generally know when you’re going to get married and how long it will take. Babies are unpredictable and can arrive at any time. Even when they do decide to come, sometimes they take their sweet time. I’m there for all of it, capturing your hard work and general badassery.

So you’re not just hiring me to photograph an event that will happen at a predictable time for a predictable amount of time. You’re hiring me to be on call for four weeks, ready to drop everything at a moment’s notice and go document your baby’s arrival for as long as it takes. Because of the unpredictability of birth, I only accept 2-3 births a month to make absolutely sure I can be at yours.

Are all photos in black-and-white?

No, you’ll get both versions of the photos – color and black-and-white.
